I deem Utumno was wayyyy East and never on any map. This is a greater god that was involved in the shaping of Arda (albeit destructively). The writings always gave me the impression it was just North of the Lamp Illuin in the beginning, since it suggests he first delved Utumno close to Illuin in order to assault the lamps when the Valar lived in Almaren. This is the best answer, since Melkor plagued and kidnapped the new born elves (to become orcs in a mockery of Illuvatars work) near Cuvienen, which was far to the east. Plus, since Morgoth reared the mountains as a defense for Utumno, it makes sense logically as well as aesthetically. On the other hand, it makes much more sense if it's further east.Įdit edit: Having Utumno at the southern apex of the Iron Mountain semicircle just looks symmetrically pleasing. Even heading at a generous NW from Cuivienen, that still places Utumno east of the Misty Mountains.Įdit: As an addition, if Utumno is where Fonstad placed it then moving to Angband because it is closer doesn't really seem worthwhile, because it wouldn't really be that much closer. So from the perspective of the elves in Cuivienen the battle was happening north of them. I agree with your sentiment that it is probably more east than Fonstad places it.įrom The Sil when the Valar break Utumno, "Then the Valar passed over Middle-earth, and they set a guard over Cuivienen and thereafter the Quendi knew nothing of the great Battle of the Powers, save that the Earth shook and groaned beneath them, and the waters were moved, and in the north there were lights as of mighty fires." There are other Tolkien-themed subreddits out there! Say hello to our friends in the following places: We're looking at starting a wiki for these common ones. Try searching before posting a new thread: odds are we've already covered some of the "classic" questions ("Who is Tom Bombadil?", "What happened to the Blue Wizards?", "Why couldn't the Eagles just take the Ring?" etc). Please make use of r/TolkienBooks and r/TolkienArt for these. Posts/comments centring entirely on promotion will be removed. ![]() You can share your content, but in a discussion-based format.
